While the farmhouse-inspired style is not new in interior designing, the trend these days is to add a modern twist to make the space not just warm and welcoming but also current and chic. In this renovation journey, we introduce a unique HDB interior design project that features the modern farmhouse look with a blend of rustic and sophisticated charm.
As one enters into this 4-room Punggol Walk HDB flat, one is immediately welcomed by a foyer, a rare sight in HDB apartments. While practical usage is integral in this home interior design, the interior designer also wanted the apartment to be as spacious as possible. To this end, the wall between the living room and kitchen is knocked down to create a seamless flow, and a foyer is added at the entrance. This way, anyone walking through the door can see the entire apartment easily.

Vintage French doors are decidedly farmhouse, and thus, they are used in the kitchen and bedrooms. Apart from being aesthetically pleasing, these doors also allow natural light to fill the space, creating a dramatic effect for the home. In the kitchen, French windows are used for the glass-door upper cabinets of the kitchen cabinets. Groove lines are added to create architectural interest to the kitchen as the details give the all-white theme a sense of visual excitement.
The living room is the heart of the apartment, and thus, a key area to showcase the contemporary-farmhouse style. Here, the use of neutral, light and fresh colour palette is essential to achieve a clean yet vintage look. While the primary choice of colour tones in this space is white and grey, earthy, warm hues such as light and dark brown are used in furniture and fixture throughout to accentuate the design.

In terms of material, having an organic and natural look is the mainstay in the living room. To recreate the raw texture modern farmhouse flair, materials with wood texture designs, such as wooden like floor and rough-hewn wood alike wallpaper are used. The style is modernised by adding neutral-shaded chic furniture. The connection to the country is further complemented with organic elements such as live plants of various sizes, giving the space a truly nature-inspired feel.
The bedrooms are designed to be minimalistic yet comfortable. In the master bedroom, cabinets double up as storage and space dividers so that additional storage is available for the owner. To be in-line with the design theme, a decorative French window is also installed as a divider in the bedroom, making the sleeping area even cosier.

To put a spin on the countryside feel, our interior designer put up a magnificent ceiling-to-floor picture of a farmland on one of the walls of the guest room. Looking at the picture, it is as if one is looking out of a window at a vast countryside from a vantage point of a hilltop. The view is even extended to the ceiling to mimic the look of a skylight. While the guest room is reserved for sibling stay over, the owner also relaxes in it while reading or enjoying a cup of tea.
